How to Draw Cartoons the Old-Time Way! Instructional Cartooning Book from 1920's

how to draw old fashioned cartoons drawing cartooning tips tacks cartooning tips for aspiring cartoonists

Take a look at this wonderful little book on cartooning techniques by cartoonist B. "Tack" Knight. Tack's Cartoon Tips for the Aspiring Professional!

In just twenty-nine pages he teaches aspiring professional artists how to draw cartoons the way they were done in the old-fashioned style of 1923!

Some of the pages are corny and not very useful today, but MOST of this book features rock-solid cartooning tips for learning how to draw in that old big-foot print cartoon style.

12 Mini Chapters on the Art of Cartooning:
  • How to draw HANDS (this page is a winner!)
  • Hats, Shoes, Wrinkles (as in clothes and drapery)
  • Lessons on drawing KIDS and ANIMALS
  • Drawing various cartoon facial Expressions
  • How to draw BACKGROUNDS
  • and even a bit on Cartoon Lettering
Warning: there's some very politically-incorrect caricature material in here. What people thought was funny back then just makes people mad today. Don't say I didn't warn you!

To read all these cartooning tips as a slideshow, (I think it's easiest to read it this way), click on:

Storyboarding DVD – All July and August Orders are Shipped

Storyboarding-dvd-Storyboard-Elements
Just a quick “thanks” to everybody who placed their order for my “Storyboard Elements” instructional DVD!

This time around I shipped out copies of the DVD course to people in Australia, France, Italy, Canada, The United Kingdom and to six different states here in the good ol’ USA.

Since things are heating up again at the studio (I have a huge pile of shows on my desk this week) I’ve got to stop taking orders by the end of this week.

I’ve contacted everybody who wrote asking me to let them know when the DVD is for sale, and hopefully everybody got those emails. But just in case you missed it, the HowToStoryboard.com website will be open until the end of the week. If you want to get in this last batch, you can click on the DVD or Click HERE or on the link below to find out more. Update: Sold out, but click on "How to Storyboard" link to be notified when the Storyboard Elements instructional DVD comes back in stock!

Ernie Bushmiller – Fritzi Ritz Comics from 1949

Ernie Bushmiller’s Fritzi Ritz comics are a strange mixture of the truly bizarre and completely pedestrian. Fritzi Ritz started as a comic strip about a young single flapper girl from the Jazz Age of the 1920’s, created by Larry Whittington. When Whittington left the strip, Fritzi Ritz was taken over by his young assistant, Ernie Bushmiller.

Ernie Bushmiller introduced the character of Phil Fumble, Fritzi’s boyfriend and funnyman. Many of these strips start with a bizarre close-up on Phil as he utters a single line as the launching pad for the rest of the strip. Looking at the pages on this post alone shows him using this technique 75% of the time!! It’s a very artificial (but extremely economical) way of getting a gag rolling.
Here’s very typical opening panel:

Ernie Bushmiller later added a little girl character to the strip… Fritzi Ritz’s niece, Nancy. Eventually, Nancy and her friend Sluggo took over the strip, and those are the characters that brought long-time fame to cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller.
